Effects of Nalbuphine on Meperidine-Induced Respiratory Depression in Rabbits

Abstract
Reversal of opiate¡ªinduced respiratory depression with the pure antagonist, naloxone, is associated with severe hypertension, acute pulmonary edema, ventricular dysrrhythmias and cardiac arrest. The present experiments evaluate the effects of nalbuphine on meperidine-induced respiratory depression in rabbits according to the changes of arterial blood gas and mean arterial blood pressure.
The results were as follows:
1. P_aCO_2 were increased significantly after meperidine administration and then decreased by nalbuphine.
2. Arterial pH and P_aO_2 were decreased and then increased by nalbuphine.
3. Mean arterial pressure was not changed significantly.
In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that nalbuphine provide a beneficial effect of meperidine-induced respiratory depression in rabbits.
